5 Tips for a Flawless Newlywed Photoshoot
I’d like to share a little insight of what it’s like during one of my photoshoots. I know some of the photos from this recent Newlywed shoot look quite magical. I always surprise myself every time I work with a couple. It’s an incredible feeling to create an image that, for me, is often beyond what I ever imagined it would look like. You can learn about my photography lessons here.
I like to be efficient during my photoshoots. And in this case, I think a couple deserves that efficiency on the most special day of their lives. Weather was not on our side. This shoot took place early March, about 35 degrees Fahrenheit, not too windy and the sun was shining. We arrived 2 hours before sunset.
The couple, Lauren and Chris, contacted me via Instagram and explained they were coming from England to get married. What an honor it is to be a wedding photographer! Click here to book me on your special day.
There is a lot that went well during this shoot. Both I and the client were very happy with the experience as well as the final images. Now let me tell you five things I did once I arrived that made the entire experience much easier for my clients and therefore me as well.
1. Be on time. I arrived 10 minutes before my client. Under no circumstances should the client arrive before me. Unless of course you took the New York City subway in which case it’s understandable!! Hahahaha.
2. Make sure clients are always comfortable. It was freezing cold during our shoot. I had the clients waiting inside the Time Out Market in between each photo. This allowed them to stay nice and warm until I was 100% ready to take the next photo. And when I say ready I mean I had the correct lens on my camera, my camera settings were set, I know the exact spot I wanted couple to stand, I know what pose I want and I know exactly where I will stand.
3. Do not walk far. The farther you walk the more time your couple has to stand around and standing around is NOT what they paid for. Here’s my philosophy… you can get a great portrait anywhere when the light is right. So why walk far? Just blur the background if your location isn’t the best. The couple doesn’t care about the location. They just want to look good and have their smiles captured for them to cherish. We never walked more than 50 feet from where we met up. However, I must acknowledge that we were literally in the best photo spot in all of New York City but still.
4. Come prepared with ideas. As a photographer I familiarize myself with images and compositions that I use for inspiration. This allows me to recognize them easily once I’m on the field. Often before an important shoot such as this I will study inspirational images from photographers I admire. Even while commuting to the shoot I will study. I’m not memorizing the photos themselves but the concept behind the photos. “Backlighting, silhouette, 50/50 composition, rule of thirds, negative space, symmetry… etc.” You can save these images on your phone and refer to them during the shoot.
5. Natural light, baby! There’s two reasons why I rarely use flash during a couples shoot. First reason is I find photos to look perfectly beautiful with natural light. So why complicate things with flash? Unless that’s your style. Second reason is I find the flash really takes away from the special moment the clients are having, particularly when working with couples of course.
